About Us
In 1997, the Big Island Woodturners Club became the first chapter of the American Association of Woodturners in the state of Hawaii. Formed by founding members, Jack Straka, Elmer Adams, Doug Leite, Barry Ching, and Kelly Dunn, the club has grown in numbers now exceeding 70. A volunteer driven organization, the club is vital and active.

Through bi-monthly meetings held at various woodturners studios on the east side of Hawaii Island, the club members share their experiences and learn from one another. A monthly club challenge encourages members to try something new and is always a fun affair. Membership in the club is simple- just attend the meetings. There are no dues to pay, the only requirement is participation.

A couple times a year, a professional demonstrator is brought to the island to share their knowledge and experience with interested members. Opportunities for hands-on classes and lectures enrich our membership and open new possibilities.

The big event is our Annual Exhibit held at the Wailoa Center Gallery in Hilo each March. The exhibit features turnings from members all over the island, including members of the West Hawaii Woodturners Club. With an opening reception, a silent auction, an educational display, free public woodturning demonstrations on Saturdays, a professional critique, and an opportunity to view over 200 turnings- there is always something wonderful going on during the exhibit. Increasing public awareness for the art of turning is made easy during this event.
